“We must arrest them”

For nature and outdoor enthusiasts, getting a panoramic view of a natural landscape is an achievement to celebrate. However, this must be done with safety in mind.

In a reel shared on instagramA hiker nearly falls off a cliff and the dangerous actions endanger other people as well.

in the account Tourons of National Parks (@touronsofnationalparks), the reel shows a group of hikers forcing a rock to fall next to a cliff, and one of the hikers in the group nearly falls with it. The rock falls along with smaller rocks, damaging neighboring trees and potentially damaging national park visitors and wildlife in the process.

“We only post people pushing rocks.” read the Instagram reel title.

When visitors ignore safety rules and recommendations in national parksNot only is their own well-being at risk, but also valuable natural spaces. From traveling on designated trails, boardwalks and cliff railings to getting up close and personal with wildlife, safety rules are implemented to protect other visitors as well as the natural habitats that thrive on protected lands.

According to an article in Wall Street JournalNational parks across the United States (Zion, Yellowstone, and more) have been experiencing similar situations with increased visitor congestion, long wait times, and vandalism events. Tourists have been accused of defacing areas in California Joshua Tree National Parkallegedly spray painting graffiti, passing gates and opening unauthorized paths through protected lands.

Unruly and disrespectful behavior within national parks is also a threat to the delicate ecosystems that national parks are designed to protect. As is the case in Instagram Reelvisitors damaged plant life and altered animal habitats with his actions.

National parks are special places that allow us connect with natureand it is important that we all do what we can to ensure the preservation of future generations.
