Dive team pulls petrified puppy out of Sims Bayou after passerby noticed dog standing on concrete beam Friday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It took firefighters from two stations and a member of the water rescue team to pull a terrified Chihuahua from the cold waters of Sims Bayou Friday morning.

A passerby saw the dog while walking through the Houston Botanical Garden and alerted gardener Fernando Vivanco, who called the police.

Vivanco said the dog was shaking while standing at the base of a concrete support beam for a pedestrian bridge over the swamp.

Vivanco told Eyewitness News he had seen alligators in that swamp before.

He said a diver swam toward the dog, but the dog jumped into the water and tried to swim away.

When the diver finally reached and pulled the petrified pup onto dry land, Vivanco said the dog was still scared and even tried to bite its rescuer.

But the story ended on a high note.

Vivanco said a woman who saw the rescue adopted the Chihuahua on the spot.
