Smooth Mars bar man receives £2 compensation from chocolate giant

A man who caused an online storm when he found a Mars bar without its signature wave has been awarded £2 in compensation.

Harry Seager’s image of the sweet shop sparked interest from thousands of members on the Dull Men’s Club Facebook page, with one calling it “appalling”.

The 34-year-old said that while Mars Wrigley UK did not give him a reason for the imperfection, members of the group said the bar had not been blown through the air.

Mars Wrigley UK said earlier this month the bar “slid” through his production line and confirmed that the swirl was maintained.

Seager, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, was on his way to a classic car show in Birmingham with friends and bought the chocolate bar at a service station in Thame, Oxfordshire.

“The only reason I emailed (Mars) was because I was interested in what might have caused it to happen. “That’s all I wanted to know and they kept brushing that question aside,” he said.

“I think £2 is great, it’ll be two free Mars bars. Maybe they could have sent me more but I’m not ungrateful. “I think it’s amazing that after everything he’s been through he received the £2 voucher.”

Mars bars were first made by hand in Slough, Berkshire, in 1932, and are still made in the town.

“Some people who used to work at the Mars factories commented (on Facebook) and said it goes through a machine called an enrober, which is like the waterfall that the bars go through,” Seager said.

“Apparently they are blown along the top as it comes out of that waterfall. Apparently there must be someone at the end to remove the ones that haven’t been hit by the air.

“I don’t know what will happen to them then. I guess they were used in products that contain Mars bars, like cakes and things like that.”

As for other sweets, Harry enjoys most chocolate bars, but is not a fan of all sweets.

“I don’t like the strawberry and orange creams in a Roses box or a Quality Street box, but I do like the coffee ones. I remember they released the coffee ones a long time ago but I remember them as a kid,” he added.

Those Quality Street Coffee Cremes are only available in John Lewis and Waitrose this Christmas.
